In Brønderslev you find both exciting hiking and bicycle trails along the Ancient Road Hærvejen. Plenty of unique nature experiences awaits when you follow the footsteps of the past along the historical route.
The Ancient Road Hærvejen is hundreds of kilometres hiking- and bicycling route that runs all the way through the mainland of Jutland - from Hirtshals and Frederikshavn in the north to Padborg in the south.
The Ancient Road can be traced back 4000 years; yet, the route was not officially confirmed until the beginning of the Middle Ages. Back then, Hærvejen served as the common arterial road.
Since then, Hærvejen has attracted all types of hikers; from beginners to true modern pilgrims, who follow Hærvejen through the magnificent nature in Jutland and further southward through Germany. Therefore, Hærvejen has also become known as the Danish Prilgrim Route. Hærvejen comprises more than 500 kilometres of hiking and 450 kilometres of cycling route, and you are sure to find at least one route that fits your needs.
The Hærvej in Northern Jutland was officially opened in May 2014. Before this, Hærvejen ended in Viborg, but history confirms a route that went both east and westward towards the North Jutland seaports.
Therefore, you both have an eastern and a western Hærvej-hiking route in Vendyssel. Only one bicycle route, though. All three routes pass through Brønderslev Kommune and offer great experiences in beautiful nature.
The eastern part of the hiking trail takes you from Aalborg via Hammer Bakker, through Ørum and Klokkerholm, and continues northward towards Frederikshavn.
Along the eastern trail, you pass by the idyllic Klokkerholm Møllesø, the a beautiful, preserved area Grevsmosen and Slettingen, as well as Pajhede Forest and Nymølle Brook and Søheden Forest Complex; the last three of them are part of Jyske Ås.
