The area just north of Dronninglund and south of Østervrå offers you a lovely landscape and outstanding nature. Here, you have a chance to experience luxuriant fields, large woods, bugs and vast moors. This area is called Jyske Ås.
Jyske Ås is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. A path of 30 kilometres leads you from Dronninglund to Østervrå.
Here you find steep hills having very old vegetation. Primeval forest.
And here you can find whitethorn, wild roses, onions, heather, juniper berries, whortle berries and elderberries. In Jyske Ås you find almost all types of nature of Vendsyssel and all kinds of deer except red deer.
The story of Jyske Ås (the Jutlandic Ridge)
Jyske Ås is 28 km long, 2-3 km wide and several of the hills are more than 100 m high. You will find yourself 136 m about sea level, when you are at the highest point of Vendsyssel (Northern Jutland, north of the Limfjord) called Knøsen.
Jyske Ås is, despite what the name indicates, not actually a ridge. It was created during the last ice age. The entire area around Dronninglund is very hilly, and interesting long barrows and burial mounds are spread across the area.
The area is packed with hiking trails and routes for cyclists, but because of the size of the area, you will still get the feeling of being alone in nature. Among other routes, one starts at Dronninglund Castle and is about 30 km long.
